What Is Hip Hop?

These days we have trusted the media and corporations to define what hip hop is. It's like now cats believe that 98.5 virgin radio is the station where hip hop lives so they hear that and fail to understand that it's some corporation owned by orthodox suit-and-tie businessmen that ain't got nothing to do with hip hop and are trying to cash in. It's like "oh, hip hop lives there! Alright so they must know. That must be what hip hop is!" But no... we have never let the media and corporations define us so why are y'all letting them do that now? Hip hop grew out of originality it was conceived by those who stood for what they believed and those that pushed against the so called conventions of the mainstream. Hip hop started with mcs, djs, graff writers and bboys that went out of their way to be different and bring something new to the table. Nowadays shits all backwards and its like you gotta be like everybody else if you wanna be "hip hop". Fuck that shit.

You gotta rap about pimping and bitches, violence and drugs and if you don't... man that ain't hip hop. You gotta be black and if you ain't, good luck getting proper exposure. You sure as hell better not be a faggot and you sure as hell better rep masculinity harder than that next brother. Every lyrical style is gonna have to sound the same and its gonna have to lack flow, rhythm, poetic meter, cadence, breath control and originality and if you don't lack all that shit good luck being talented. Also, y'all are all gonna have to bite everybody else's style cuz thats what sells. If it doesn't sound like everybody else then that obviously ain't hip hop. If you don't rock the wackest drum kit with automated claps and snares that ain't even sound like snares, if you don't sequence a catchy beat with the right bpm then you ain't gonna get a record deal and you ain't gonna get exposure cuz that ain't hip hop that you're making.

Y'all don't even know the half, the music ain't even the most important aspect of it all. Most important of all is the clothes you gotta rock. Make sure you got the right front on so that you're fronting just a little bit better than them other guys. These orthodox suit-and-tie businessmen that hijacked hip hop found the ingredients to conjure up instant soul in a bottle. And if you ain't drinking this mass produced soul in a bottle and you ain't faking the funk, then hip hop ain't for you...

Just like b-real said "This is hip hop, not fashion", but nowadays there is so much importance on fashion and ideal looks in the music industry that it takes precedence over the musical quality itself. You ain't gotta rap or sing anymore just let the rich record executives produce your beats and write your lyrics. For everything else, there's auto-pitch... Keep sucking their dicks and they'll hook you up with all the bitches, all the bling, and all the money and fame you would ever want. That's far more important than hip hop innit?
